Many years ago, over (2016 years) on a day like this, Jesus was sentenced to death by Pontius Pilate who was the Governor of Judea at that time.
Jesus was flogged, bruised, humiliated, his hands and feet were nailed to a cross, and his side was pierced with a spear, as a result of all these, he bled to death.
It was the most shameful kind of death at that time; it is the equivalent of death by hanging in today’s world. Only criminals who had committed very heinous crimes were subjected to that kind of death.
So, what crime did Jesus commit? Let’s take a look at the charges brought against him after he was arrested in the garden of Gethsemane.
Matthew wrote in Matthew 26:59-60 (ASV )
Now the chief priests and the whole council sought false witness against Jesus, that they might put him to death;
60 and they found it not, though many false witnesses came. But afterward came two,
61 and said, this man said, I am able to destroy the temple of God, and to build it in three days.
Mark also gave the same account in Mark14:55-58
We also read in John 18:29-30 when Pilate asked what charges are you bringing against this man.
His accusers could not provide any significant charge against him.
After trying Him Pilate could not find him guilty but the people kept shouting crucify him crucify him so Pilate washed his hands in front of the crowd saying I am innocent of this man’s blood before handing Jesus over to the people who wanted him dead.
Again the I ask the question what did Jesus do? The answer is simple He died for you and me, to be saved, he died for our sins to be forgiven so that we can be reconciled back to God.
